Las Vegas, Nevada. It was not until famed explorer Captain John Fremont wrote of Las Vegas in 1844, that anyone other than Spanish explorers and the indigenous Indian population knew of the area that is now known as Las Vegas.

Las Vegas became an incorporated city on March 16, 1911. At the time of incorporation, the city encompassed 19.18 square miles, and had approximately 800 inhabitants, less than 1 percent of the states total population. Clark County had a population at the time of 3,321.

Today both Las Vegas and Clark County's growth continues. The latest population prediction in the Las Vegas Valley alone is 2 million people by 2005. Las Vegas is the county seat for Clark County.

The often mentioned, Las Vegas valley is comprised of several jurisdictions and includes the cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and unincorporated Clark County.

More than 244,000 students file into the Las Vegas area public school classrooms each year, and that number continues to grow with the growth of the area. The Clark County School District is one of the largest in the country and is a part of the fastest growing metropolitan area in the U.S. There are more than 200 elementary, middle and senior high schools, plus numerous parochial and private schools in the Las Vegas valley.

This is a city that has something for everyone. Recognized all over the world, the famous Las Vegas Strip is a place where tourists can enjoy a walk in the warm desert evening, or take a stroll downtown and view a dazzling light show that spans an entire street.
